Most vehicles built since the late 1990s use a key with a tiny chip inside. The car will not start unless it recognises that chip, so a copy that is only cut will turn the lock but never start the engine.

Locksmith Knights cuts and programs transponder keys on site in Raleigh and Wake County, often for less time and hassle than going to a dealership.

What we do

  • Cut and program a spare transponder key
  • Make a key when all keys are lost
  • Replace a damaged or worn chip key
  • Program new keys to the car and remove old ones where the vehicle allows
  • Reprogram keys after an ignition or immobilizer repair
  • Cut high-security laser-cut keys

How it works

  1. Call with the make, model, year and VIN if you have it.
  2. We verify that you own the vehicle and match the key blank and chip type.
  3. The key is cut to the lock and the chip is programmed to the car.
  4. We test it by starting the car, locking and unlocking, and checking any remote buttons.

Spare now, or an emergency later

Making a spare while you still have a working key is usually simpler and cheaper than making a first key after all keys are lost. If you have only one key, a spare is the best fifteen minutes you can spend. See lost car keys if you are already in that situation.

Questions we hear

How do I know if my key has a chip?

If the head of the key is plastic and thicker than a plain metal key, it likely has a chip. We can confirm from your year and model.

Will the old key still work?

On many vehicles we can remove lost keys from the memory so they no longer start the car.

Can you do this at my home or work?

Yes. We are mobile and bring the cutting and programming tools to you.
