A key that snaps in the lock is more common than people think, especially in cold weather or with a worn key. The worst thing to do is push harder or reach for glue or pliers, which can push the piece deeper or damage the lock.
Locksmith Knights removes broken keys from house doors, deadbolts, car doors, trunks, ignitions and padlocks across Raleigh and Wake County.
Where we extract broken keys
- House doors and deadbolts
- Car doors, trunks and glove boxes
- Ignition cylinders
- Padlocks, mailbox locks and gate locks
- Commercial doors and file cabinets
- Keys broken off with part still sticking out or flush inside the lock
How it works
- Stop turning the key and do not use glue or force.
- Call us and tell us which lock and how much of the key is showing.
- The technician uses extractor tools made for the job, then checks the lock for damage.
- We cut a new key and rekey or replace the lock if it was harmed.
How to avoid it next time
A key that bends, wears smooth or sticks has usually reached the end of its life. Have a fresh copy cut from the original before it breaks. See key duplication for how we copy keys.

Questions we hear
Will the lock still work after you remove the key?
Usually yes. We check it after extraction and fix or replace it only if it was damaged.
Can you get a key out of an ignition?
Yes in most cases. If the cylinder is worn, see ignition repair.
What if the key broke flush with the lock?
That is still removable in many cases with specialized extractors.
