A master key system lets each person carry one key that opens only the doors they are allowed to use, while a manager or owner has a key that opens many or all of them. It replaces a heavy ring of keys with a plan.
Locksmith Knights designs, rekeys and expands master key systems for offices, apartment communities, schools, churches and other multi-door properties in Raleigh and Wake County.
What we do
- Plan the key levels: individual, department, building and grand master
- Rekey existing locks into a master key system
- Add new locks to an existing system
- Install restricted keyways, so keys cannot be copied at a hardware store
- Keep a key record so you know who holds what
- Rekey the system when a master key is lost
How it works
- We walk the property or go over a door list with you.
- We map which people and groups need access to which doors.
- Locks are rekeyed or replaced to match the plan, and every door is tested with every key.
- You get a key schedule and a plan for adding or removing keys later.
Why restricted keys matter
A restricted keyway uses a key blank that is controlled by the manufacturer and sold only to authorized dealers. If an employee leaves, you cannot be surprised by a copy made across town. Pair it with a signed key log for the strongest control.
Lost a master key
Tell us right away. Rekeying the affected locks is far cheaper than any break-in. See rekeying for how it works.

Questions we hear
Can you convert my current locks?
Often yes. Many commercial cylinders can be rekeyed into a system. We check the hardware during the walk-through.
How many levels can a system have?
It depends on the lock brand and the pin design. We plan the system with enough room to grow.
Is a master key system less secure?
A well-designed system with restricted keys and a good key log can be more secure than a pile of unrelated keys nobody tracks.
