When the key will not turn, sticks in the ignition, or the car starts only some of the time, the ignition cylinder is often worn out. Locksmith Knights repairs and replaces ignition cylinders at your location in Raleigh and Wake County.

We can also fix an ignition damaged by a failed theft attempt and match the new cylinder to your existing key.

Ignition problems we fix

  • Key that will not turn or feels gritty
  • Key stuck in the ignition or steering wheel lock
  • Car that starts only after jiggling the key
  • Ignition cylinder worn from years of use
  • Ignition damaged after attempted theft
  • New cylinder keyed to your existing key and door keys where possible

How it works

  1. Call with the make, model and year, and describe what the key does.
  2. The technician checks whether the problem is the key, the cylinder or the steering lock.
  3. The cylinder is repaired or replaced, and the key is cut and programmed as needed.
  4. We test starting, turning and removing the key several times.

Is it the key or the ignition?

A worn key can look just like a bad ignition. A fresh copy cut from the original code often solves it. The technician will test with a good key first so you do not pay for a cylinder you do not need. If the key is bent or broken, see broken key extraction.

Questions we hear

Can you replace an ignition on a newer car with a chip key?

In many cases yes, and we program the key to the car afterward. Some models need dealer tools, and we tell you upfront.

Why is my steering wheel locked?

The steering lock engages when the wheel is turned after the key is removed. Gently turn the wheel while turning the key. If that does not work, call us before forcing it.

Can you match the ignition to my door key?

Often yes, so you carry a single key.
