You do not need to change your locks on a schedule. You should change them when something changes. These are the common reasons.

  1. You just moved in. You cannot know who has copies of the old keys.
  2. A key was lost or stolen. Anyone who finds it could use it.
  3. A roommate, partner or tenant moved out. A fresh key makes sure they no longer have access.
  4. A contractor, cleaner or former employee had keys. Rekey when the work or job ends.
  5. There was a break-in or attempt. Damaged hardware should be replaced, and the rest rekeyed.
  6. The lock is worn. If the key sticks, the latch does not catch or the bolt will not fully extend, repair or replace it.
  7. You want an upgrade. A higher-grade deadbolt or a keypad or smart lock gives you more control over who comes and goes.

Rekey or replace?

If the lock is in good shape, rekeying is the quick fix. If it is damaged or you want better hardware, replace it. Our guide explains how to choose between rekeying and replacing.

Questions we hear

How often should I change my locks?

There is no fixed schedule. Change them when something changes: who has keys, a key is lost, or the lock starts to fail. Locks last a long time but they do wear.

Should I change the locks after buying a home?

It is a smart move. You cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist.

I rent. Can I change the locks myself?

It depends on your lease. Talk to your landlord or property manager before changing or rekeying anything.
