Both options make old keys useless, so the real question is whether your current locks are worth keeping. Here is how to tell.

What rekeying does

Rekeying changes the inside of the lock so a new key works and the old one does not. The lock, deadbolt and handle stay on the door. It is a good choice when your hardware is in good shape and you simply want old keys disabled: after moving in, after a lost key, after a roommate or ex-partner moves out, or after a contractor or former employee has had copies.

What replacing does

Replacing swaps in new hardware. It makes sense when the lock is loose, worn or damaged, after a break-in or forced entry, when it is basic builder-grade hardware you want to upgrade, or when you want a different finish or a smart lock.

A quick way to decide

Turn the key. If it sticks, wiggles, or the bolt does not fully throw, replace. If everything works smoothly and the lock looks fine, rekey. If you are not sure, the technician will check the lock on site and tell you which one makes sense before any work starts.

Questions we hear

Is a rekeyed lock less secure than a new one?

A rekeyed lock is as secure as the lock it started as. Rekeying does not raise or lower the grade of the hardware. If your locks are basic or worn, replacing them is the way to upgrade.

Can every lock be rekeyed?

Most standard house deadbolts, knobs and levers can. A few very cheap or damaged locks cannot, and the technician will tell you before starting.

Can all my doors use one key?

Yes. We can rekey compatible locks so one key opens every door you choose, which is handy for front, back and garage entry doors.

How long does it take?

Each lock takes only a few minutes once the technician is at your door, so most homes are finished in about an hour. Larger properties take longer.
