Modern car keys are small computers. Knowing which type you have makes it much easier to get the right replacement quickly.

The four common types

  • Basic metal key. No chip and nothing to program. It only needs to be cut. Mostly found on older vehicles.
  • Transponder key. A chip in the plastic head talks to the car. The key must be recognized by the engine immobilizer, so cutting alone will not start the car.
  • Remote head or flip key. A key with lock and unlock buttons built in. The chip and the remote buttons may be programmed separately.
  • Smart key or proximity fob. Used with push-button start. It is programmed to the car, and most have a hidden emergency blade for the door.

Does every key need programming?

No. Basic keys do not. Transponder, remote and smart keys usually do. A programming tool is connected to the car, usually through the diagnostic port under the dash, and the new key is added to the car memory. Some vehicles allow owners to add a key themselves, but only with an existing working key.

Dead fob? Check these first

  • Replace the battery. Many fobs use a coin cell such as a CR2032, and the type is printed on the old battery.
  • Use the emergency key blade inside the fob to open the door.
  • Many push-button cars will start if you hold the fob against the start button or a marked spot. Check your owner manual.
  • If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may need reprogramming or replacement.

Questions we hear

Can a locksmith make a key with a chip in it?

Yes. The blade is cut and the chip is programmed so the car recognizes it, the same way it recognizes the original.

Will a key fob I bought online work?

Sometimes, but online fobs often arrive with the wrong chip or frequency for the car. Tell us the exact make, model and year before you buy anything so we can tell you what will work.

My fob stopped working. Is it the battery?

That is the most common cause and the cheapest fix, so try a fresh battery first. If it still does not work, the fob may need to be reprogrammed or replaced.

Can I program a key myself?

Some vehicles let you add a key with a procedure in the owner manual, but usually only when you already have a working key. If you have no working key, a locksmith or dealer needs special tools.
